What does “MFS” (MultiFonction System) mean? A system consisting of an orthodontic diagnosis and treatment protocol, based on monitoring the various functions.
Orthodontics based on the MFS philosophy relies on a series of criteria that include case-specific orthodontic diagnosis and treatment, as well as occlusal adjustment during the retention phase.
This orthodontic philosophy, on the other hand, defends three levels of action in orthodontics:
• prevention in its purest sense, without the use of orthodontic appliances, based solely on the early normalization of altered
oral functions, through a “programmed stimulation therapy” that uses certain pre-fabricated “MFS” elements;
• interceptive treatments, treatment methods
early correction of malocclusions using fixed and removable (functional) systems such as the “educators”;
corrective treatments, with the objective of meeting the 12 key criteria of occlusion. The mechanical setup used is ergonomic but highly sophisticated from a biomechanical standpoint, using super-elastic archwires with reversed curvatures and anterior and posterior skeletal anchorage of the mini-screw type.
The “stability” and “aesthetics” criteria form the main pair in the planning of orthodontic treatment MFS, with emphasis on the first of the two criteria.
That is why MFS brackets exist with varying torques, allowing us to choose an “individualized” end-of-treatment prescription, in line with each case’s morphological and occlusal characteristics.
This variability of torques allows the brackets to act as “active” elements in the bio-dynamics of tooth movements.
A short history of orthodontics by J. Philippe
Orthodontics has advanced in stages. In a rather schematic way, seven periods can be distinguished, each marked by a guiding idea.
Essential balances / Postural balance by J. Bohar
The most recent national meeting of SBR, held in Marseille, had as its guiding
idea “Essential balances”.
What better setting to address postural balance?
The presentation is structured in three stages. After establishing the link between the eye and posture, then between the eye and mandibucation and thereby showing the link between mandibucation and posture, the third part is devoted to postural diagnosis.

The PUL (Universal Light Propulsor): 10 years of use by 2 clinicians (Part 2) by A. Firmin-Vincent and E. Allouch
Designed in 1997 by Élie Callabe, orthodontist, and Jean-Charles Morin, orthodontic appliance maker, the PUL or Universal Light Propulsor was first presented in France in 2001, after four years of clinical and technical validations.
Initially used in the treatment of Class II malocclusions, it benefited from technical improvements that enable correction of sagittal, vertical, transverse and functional aspects, which is why it is known as the “4D Harmonizer.”
Quality approach: what is it about? by F. Aloe-Tavernier
Historically, the quality approach finds its roots in industry, with the aim of guaranteeing product compliance. At first, the goal was to eliminate non-compliant products; subsequently, efforts focused on ensuring quality of products and services that would continuously improve the production system, but also the organization of the company.
This concept was then extended to non-profit organizations such as education or healthcare.
The chain of signifiers by M.G. Choukroun
The concepts of signifier and signified come from linguists (Ferdinand de Saussure). The signifier refers to the word as it is written (i.e., the written form), or as it is pronounced (i.e., the sound). The signified refers to meaning.
The stéricole by P. Azoulay
The Stéricode system is a new device that makes all the issues related to traceability of every piece of material in the dental office less complicated and less time-consuming—particularly anything that can be sterilized.
It is also a system that allows better stock management, tracking of materials used in the mouth, and perfect compliance during audits by providing a complete report of these procedures (fig. 1).
The required equipment must be installed in the sterilization room.
This is the ideal location because it is very close to the sterilizers and to all the equipment used. This makes it possible to ensure the best possible hygiene and asepsis for the treatment of equipment that has been contaminated during procedures, and it meets the quality approach that clinicians want to implement in their practices.
