PRESENTATION

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDERS AND THE ORTHODONTIST

Dr Wacyl MESNAY,

Qualified Specialist in ODF, DU in Occlusodontology, DU in Stress Management and Behavioural Therapy. He served as President of the IDF College of Occlusodontology and led a Pain and Temporo-Mandibular Disorders consultation at the Bretonneau Hospital (Paris) for 22 years. Lecturer at the University Paris V, invited speaker and author of numerous articles on the topic; he runs the TMD section in the SBR journal.

SUMMARY:

Orthodontists are particularly exposed to temporomandibular disorders in their patients in their day-to-day practice.
Over the past 30 years, our understanding of Temporo-Mandibular Disorders has evolved considerably.
Current recommendations for treating these disorders are based on a stabilization technique and functional re-education similar to so-called “integrative” treatments used for general musculoskeletal disorders.
In line with the recommendations of various European and North American academies, the author presents a groundbreaking approach to screening and treatment, particularly suited to practitioners in their day-to-day practice. This approach makes it possible to identify and manage immediately the majority of Temporo-Mandibular Disorders—that is, 80% of cases. The therapeutic solutions are simple, effective, and compatible with everyday practice. Clinical cases and the results will be presented in video form.
