Exploration of mandibular kinematics,
modes of mastication and systemic orthodontics.

Whether before or after treatment, we observe our patients’ dental arches in OIM, i.e. in static relationship. Yet the arches serve to chew, i.e. to move: this is even their main function.

So shouldn’t they also be examined in movement? But how?

Can the chewing pattern be inferred from the exploration of mandibular lateral movement?

What is its relevance in orthodontics?

It would seem that the masticatory constraints imposed on the alveolodental units influence the organization of the arch articulation—that is, the occlusion. The latter would adapt to the iterative masticatory forces depending on
whether they are symmetrical or asymmetrical, anterior or posterior, strong or weak…

Thus, systemic orthodontics describes several types of mandibular kinematics linked to the diversity of malocclusions, leading to numerous practical applications for both diagnosis and treatment
orthodontic.

The advantages of this functional approach lead us to ask ourselves: could it be that examination of kinematics eventually becomes a necessity?
